Community Public Health Program
The Faculty of Public Health accepts students to study abroad within its Community Public Health (CPH) program, which is coordinated by the Council on International Education (CIEE).
As part of the CPH study abroad program, the Faculty of Public Health offers 3 courses. Each course is 4 credits and offered at the Year 3 (Junior) level:
- 510101: Community Public Health
- 510102: Public Health Management in Thailand
- 510103: Public Health Field Practicum
The program is offered twice per year and lasts 16 weeks (August to December and January to May).
The CPH program is a unique opportunity for international students to gain first-hand experience in community engagement
As part of the coursework, students spend around 2-3 weeks living in at least two different local villages, engaging with community members using ethnographic research. Ultimately, students collaborate with the community to design, fund, and implement a project that is centered on a health issue prioritized by the community and built on evidence collected via primary data collection conducted by the students.
In addition, students also gain an in-depth understanding of the Thai health system, including financing, delivery, and governance. The methods of instruction include classroom lectures, discussions, and ample site visits. The health analysis culminates in a one-week study trip to a neighboring Southeast Asia country in order to comparatively assess that country’s health system through the perspective of local policymakers, health practitioners, and NGOs.
